Level 5 Diploma in Psychotherapeutic Counselling (PCL5)

 This course will give you the knowledge and developed skills to work competently within private practice, or as a senior counsellor within an agency setting. You'll gain new knowledge to support you working ethically and safely as a decision maker. This includes the skills of assessment and safeguarding clients who are at risk as well as many others. You'll also develop your confidence and attunement working within diversity and with clients from a range of backgrounds and explore the ways in which your career can develop beyond the therapist chair.


This is an exciting step in your professional development this qualification meets the competencies of SCoPEd Column B and with sufficient practice hours provides candidates with a route to membership and accreditation with professional associations in counselling approved by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA) e.g. BACP, NCPS, ACC. 


Our PCL5 is ideal for:


  • Qualified counsellors who want to work ethically and effectively in private practice as independent practitioners
  • Deepening your understanding of assessment and high-risk case management.

Entry requirements

  • Age 19+
  • An interview
  • A suitable Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling or equivalent. Please contact us to discuss your prior learning. 
  • A robust understanding of Person-Centred theory.
  • 1 year post-qualification experience with clients.
  • A reference from your previous learning provider.

Assessment on this course occurs in 3 complimentary forms. Each type of assessment is planned by our Greenwood team and you will be supported to be assessed as proficient across all three areas:


Academic - The written work

Across the course you'll complete a range of written work to form a robust portfolio of evidence. This includes:


  • Regular homework
  • Two essays
  • A case study


Experiential - The skills practice

This is not just a text-book course. At Greenwood you'll regularly participate in practicing skills in our purpose-designed skills practice rooms.


Development - The personal development

Counselling skills is as much about behaviours as it is skills. As an ongoing assessment across the course you'll be assessed on how you're demonstrating the principle qualities aligned with this qualification such as:

  • Respecting and adhering to boundaries.
  • The ability to take feedback.
  • The ability to respect and engage with difference and diversity.



Dates and times

Our PCL5 course totals 120 classroom hours. We spread this for 6 hours a day, with sessions  occurring fortnightly (see our term dates here). Our recruitment window is open now and we welcome applications. Please see the bottom of this page for the link to contact us.


Our PCL5 course totals 120 classroom hours. Our next intake is September 2026. This 30-week programme is on the following day:


Thursday (4 hours a week): 5:00pm - 9:00pm


Fees

Our Level 5 Diploma in Psychotherapeutic Counselling course is £2,450. This includes a non-refundable deposit of £700 which is required to secure your place. We offer a payment plan for you to spread the payments of your course into monthly instalments.


Our payment plan terms are as follows:

10 x monthly payments of £180.

Total: £2,500 (including a £50 administration fee)


Unfortunately our courses do not attract funding however we do support employer sponsorship.

Industry leading guest speakers

We want you to learn from the best, so we invite them to Greenwood! During your PCL5 course we invite some of the most knowledgeable minds in the industry to expand your learning experience and support your academic knowledge.

A stand-alone induction day

We don't take any time away from your learning. Our induction day will be outside of your guided learning hours, dedicated to answering your questions and preparing you for your course. We will make sure that all paperwork is completed and you're all set for session one.

Two dedicated tutors

Your PCL5 will be run by two tutors. You'll get the benefit of two different, yet complimentary teaching styles from your tutoring team as well as two tutor engaged in the assessment of your work. And with two tutors assigned, we'll provide you with continuity in your learning and efficient assessment turnaround.

Face-to-face teaching at our Keyworth Academy

Our courses are designed to be delivered face-to-face in our new academy in Keyworth, Nottinghamshire. Along with the main classroom area, our academy has three purpose-designed skills practice rooms as well as a break out room with library and a kitchen. Everything you need for an enjoyable 6-hour sessions with us.

Small class sizes

Our classes are limited to a maximum of 8 students. We provide you with a great range of peers to learn with, but class sizes that are small enough for you and your tutors to really get to know each other too.

Certified qualification

As with all of our courses, completion of the Level 5 Diploma in Psychotherapeutic Counselling comes with an industry recognised qualification. All of our qualifications are certified by our awarding body, CPCAB.

 The additional costs associated with this course include

  • At least 10 hours of personal counselling during this course and a requirement for 40 hours of personal therapy by the end of the course. (30 of these hours may have been gained from your previous qualifications).
  • 60 hours of client work.
  • Clinical Supervision.
  • Insurance.
  • Ethical membership.
  • Two course books
  • A stand-alone, digital recording device

 Counselling is a mandatory requirement of this course as set out by our awarding body.
At Greenwood we require a minimum 10 hours of personal counselling.


 Our awarding body also require evidence of a total of 40 hours of personal therapy in total, by the end of the qualification. The additional 30 hours may have been gained from your previous qualifications or from private personal therapy you've participated in.


Some candidates choose to have more personal counselling for additional support with personal growth. We actively welcome this.
